Bickton Narrow Gauge

Perseus

Perseus is a BIG 7¼” gauge locomotive based on the Tinkerbell class locos.  The frames are 72" long and this class stands alone (almost) as the driver rides on the loco rather than a riding truck.   My client has done a remarkable job putting together the frames, plate-work and running gear in a small garage with minimal facilities.  However, when it came to design and machining motion and cylinders he contacted me to speed things along!

Perseus is being built to work hard on the Moors Valley Railway.  There are many modifications from the Tinkerbell design - larger cylinders and Walschaerts valve gear as well as a loco style boiler.  A considerable amount of CAD development and valve motion simulation has been necessary to get the motion just  right.  The CAD data will be re-used to drive the CNC mill when that parts are made as well as providing profiles for laser cutting of profiles.

Perseus is now in service and I hope to add photos of the official naming ceremony in the near future,,,

Cylinder Maching

The steam chest attachments are drilled and then tapped on the CNC mill. The automatic tapping head is a remarkable device - 10 M6 holes are taopped in under 2 minutes!

Substantial frames

Perseus' frames on the building stand in the work give an idea of the size of the loco!

Machined cylinders

- assembled with the steam chests and front covers in place.

Cylinder

CAD model is used for optimising cylinder components and ensuring they fit together as required!

Walschearts valve gear

getting the hi-tec treatment. The motion of components can be analysed and refined before any metal is cut.

The expansion link assembled on it's carrier
